What is a Michelin Star?
Coveted by chefs worldwide, a Michelin star is the ultimate award for culinary excellence. The path to receiving a star starts with a visit from an anonymous Michelin inspector.
Restaurants are then reviewed and judged based on five criteria: quality of products, mastery of flavor and cooking technique, the chef’s personality and how it is represented, value for money, and consistency over visits.
If a restaurant excels in each category over multiple visits, a group of Michelin inspectors will discuss and decide whether to award stars or not.
What is The Michelin Star Rating System?
Worthy restaurants can receive either a one, two, or three-star rating.
A restaurant that receives one star is a very good restaurant in its category. A two-star rating means excellent cooking that is worth a detour. A three-star rating is reserved for restaurants with exceptional cuisine worth a special journey.
Regardless of how many Michelin stars are awarded to a restaurant, receiving this accolade signifies that they have the highest standards and serve outstanding cuisine.
The History of The Michelin Star Rating System
The very first Michelin guide was created in 1900 in France. It was initially intended to inspire travel and the demand for cars and Michelin tires. However, it has now become the most highly sought-out culinary award in the world.
From its marketing beginnings, it eventually transformed to eliminate advertisements and started giving Michelin Star ratings to French fine dining establishments in 1926.
It wasn’t until much later, in 2005, that the guide started ranking restaurants in the United States. Today, the Michelin guide includes 37 countries on four continents.
Another notable byproduct of the Michelin Guide is the Bib Gourmand rating system which awards restaurants for top-quality cuisine at moderate prices. At the time, the Bib Gourmand aimed to reflect the current economic climate.
